If my comments on Monday during the Prime Gaming article weren’t clear enough, I love a good Souls-like. It was only four months ago on our YouTube channel that I reviewed Dark Souls 3, which I only bothered to start up again since reviewing Cold Symmetry’s Mortal Shell. A similar idea to the From Software developed games about living in Newcastle, Mortal Shell (early-on) went a bit more Dark Souls 2 than anything else. Basically, it was dudes-in-armor everywhere quite a lot of the time, sometimes broken up with taking mushrooms and fighting massive frogs.
Well, if your issue was the fact it was a bit murky and you wanted a higher frame rate, but didn’t want to provide Epic Games Store “the satisfaction” of being a storefront, you might be in luck. Well, first you need to be a PS5 or Xbox Series X/S owner, but who doesn’t have one of those not very readily available consoles that have been, in some areas, hard to find? I can honestly say that I didn’t know when I was sent the press release about this one, but Mortal Shell‘s Enhanced Edition is hitting the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S soon, very soon.
Tomorrow, in fact. Announced on Thursday, the Enhanced Edition will be coming to the PS5 and Xbox Series X on March 4th, with notable improvements to the resolution and frame-rate. As the press release notes: “Along with gorgeous upgraded textures and razor-sharp 4K resolution, it will deliver an uncompromised 60 frames-per-second gameplay on PS5 and Xbox Series X,” running at 30FPS on the Series S in 4K. You know, the usual stuff that comes with these enhanced editions, as I am sure we’re all used to by now.
You might be thinking, “but how much is this gonna cost me?” If you already have the PS4 or Xbox One edition, nothing. On March 4th, much like the Sekiro: Game of the Year Edition, you’ll just be upgraded for free onto the shiny new edition of swearing and wanting to bite your controller in half. Though, if you are now just looking into picking up Mortal Shell, “this remastered next-generation version will keep to its last-gen launch MSRP of $29.99 (€29.99 / £24.99).”
Though for those of us who cling on to disc copies of games for the eventual end of the world, which my uncle keeps telling me is next week, you’ll have to wait until April. Though, arguably, it might be worth it as the Deluxe Set of the Enhanced Edition “comes with a 140-page art book showcasing never-before-seen concept art and illustrations created during the game’s development.” I’ll admit, I am a sucker for a good art book of Souls-like games, so I might be jumping on this when they are released. The Deluxe set will be releasing for slightly more, at $39.99 (€39.99 / £34.99), but for a special art book edition, that’s relatively cheap these days.
